Abstract

Certain criteria in relation to tissue support must be met before the placement of a mandibular prosthesis. These criteria are as follows: (1) adequate lingual and buccal vestibular depth, (2) appropriate load bearing tissues over the reconstructed mandibular alveolar ridge, (3) adequate mechanical and functional tissue retention of the prosthesis, (4) adequate oral opening, and (5) proper alignment of the reconstructed mandible in relation to the maxilla and temporal mandibular joints. The mandibular reconstruction patient may require preprosthetic surgical procedures before oral and dental rehabilitation. The most common of these procedures include vestibuloplasty and dental implant placement. Once the criteria are met, the patient can be restored to function and aesthetics with a fixed or removable prosthesis.
